519 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Episode 0: The Fire & The Song
Location: Runabout Tierney
Timeline: shortly before the meet & greet

As Lieutenant Commander Brendan Dernah was preparing to leave for his next assignment, Captain LuCypher entered the shuttlebay to try one last time to convince his First Officer to stay. He had grown to trust as well as confide in the Betazoid. Brendan, for his part, didn't truly want to leave but he was growing a little accustomed to the way things worked on board the Damocles/i> and the only thing he could do was transfer to another ship. LuCypher paused as he made his way into the massive shuttlebay which doubled as a Marine dropship bay as well.

"Captain, you can come out now," Brendan said with a smile.
"Did you just read my mind?" the captain asked his inevitably former First Officer.
Brendan laughed and said, "No sir, your thoughts were shouting at me. But I suppose I should hear what it is you've come to offer me should I change my mind. Shoot, Captain."
"I'm not going to ask you to stay anymore, Brendan. I've finally come to terms with your leaving, but not the reason. You can't possibly think you don't have a future on the Damocles.
"Captain, I've already reached the second highest position and there is no way I'll ever make Captain by staying," Brendan said, choking back tears. "I told myself I wouldn't do this and I blame you." Brendan grinned through his tears. Staaefan LuCypher moved towards his ex-FO and embraces him. They both give each other long last goodbye hugs.
"A former officer of mine told me that 'anything is possible if you wanted it enough."
"Now you're using my own words against me?" Brendan looked up at his former CO and smiled.
"Am i wrong? And by extension you as well?" LuCypher grinned as he released Brendan and said. "Shouldn't you be going, Commander?"
"I suppose so, Captain. And it's Lieutenant now. I'm OK with this too," Brendan said and then turned to enter the runabout. "Pilot, are we ready to leave?" he asked his pilot, who just happened to be a friend of his, Lieutenant, jg Sean Mulvenon.

As the runabout lifted and began to leave the shuttlebay, Captain Staefaan LuCypher took one long last look at the runabout as it left before leaving the shuttlebay and said to himself 'There go two of the finest officers I've ever served with. Treat them well and don't abuse them, please.' And then, he left the bay and returned to the Bridge.

After 2 days travel, Lieutenants Brendan and Mulvenon were ready to be off the vessel. They had rekindled their estranged friendship and Brendan had even asked if the young man would like to be assistant Operations Officer. Sean literally jumped at the chance. "USS Goddard, this is the USS Nightwing requesting permission to dock. Comm...Lieutenant, we;re receiving docking instructions and I'm taking us in,"
"Seat backs and tray tables to their upright positions?" Brendan laughed at his own comment.
"I think that goes without saying, sir."

OOC: And the rest of history of the future? Or is it?
