464 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Episode 0: The Fire & The Song
Location: The USS Oberon
Timeline: many years in the past (of our future)

Brendan was getting ready to leave Starbase 113 with which ship he had yet to be determined or possibly made without his knowledge. So he was preparing his things to leave either on a starship bound for somewhere else or on one back to Earth. It was then that his door chime rang. He rose from his bed, walked to the door and was shocked by who was standing in it. "Lieutenant, jg Brendan Dernah, you are hereby requested and required to report to the USS Oberon in 23 hours. Oh and Brendan, congratulations," said Commander Yolanda Tabak.

"Thank you, Commander. I think anyway," Dernah said dumbfounded. It was rare to get an assignment hand-delivered to your dorm room and even rarer still for it to be given by a command-level officer.

"You're very much welcome, Lieutenant. Now, don't be late or we'll leave without you," Tabak said with a devilish grin.

"Aye sir."

"And Brendan, it's wonderful to see you back to yourself...more or less," and then she turned and left. She had been referring to was his de-ageing to 18 yo, which was why he was sent back first to Betazed and last to Earth to undergo counseling. So after reliving his younger life all over again, he was finally ready to get back into space. He was also looking forward to serving an a Discovery-class starship. Brendan got right on with packing in order to get other things in order. He had someone to see...one more and yet again.

Once he had finished his work, he left to go catch up with Samus. But when he arrived at Samus' apartment, he had found out that he had already left on his assignment; the USS Roosevelt. "Cameron, when did he leave?" Brendan asked.

Cameron Justin Walkmore was an engineer at the CoE base in LaJoya. "When did he leave?" Brendan asked.

"He left yesterday, I thought you knew, Brendan," Cameron said.

"No, he didn't even mention he'd been assigned," Brendan said crestfallen so he turned and left for his dorm room.

Why hadn't Samus contacted him before he left or that he had gotten an assignment? Also, why hadn't he felt him leave? Had their relationship suffered so much without either feeling the other? He had changed much in the past, had even been de-aged but had been working with counselors and even other professors ad nauseam to his deployable status back.

"OK well I'll be going now. I need to get to my ship," Brendan said as he turned and left.

"Good luck, Brendan. I know Samus would say the same were he here," Justin said.

Brendan just looked back in Justin's direction and nodded.

Respectfully submitted,
Lieutenant Brendan Dernah
Chief Operations Officer
USS Goddard
