~The Following Morning~

Lisald had started working on the departmental staff candidates the night before, after he had escaped the clutches of Chief Petty Officer Cameron, and after he had showered and unpacked a little. This morning, he had gotten to work in the Main Science Labs. He had taken inventory of all the equipment and supplies, which took all of the morning. He was impressed with the hardware afforded to him with this new ship. On the Cygnus, the ship had undergone a major renovation just prior to his being assigned there as the Alien Archaeologist and Anthropologist, fresh out of the Academy. It had been state-of-the-art, albeit in an older spaceframe. Still, this ship, while smaller and not exactly designed to be a pure science vessel the way the Nebula-class Cygnus had been, carried its weight easily with the superior equipment installed.

After lunch, Lisald got to working on the departmental staff candidates he had put together last night before bed. He had come up with what he thought was a solid list, but upon review, a few of the candidates he had picked out were not as good as he thought, so he had gone back and double checked everything. He figured he was a lot more tired last night that he thought, even factoring in the 26 hour days of the normal Bajoran circadian cycle. By the time he had finished with it today, he barely had time to get it to the Captain. It was just a few minutes after 1730, less than half an hour before the Captain's deadline of 1800 hours. Vaat had figured he would have had this done long before now, but here he was, cutting it close. He looked at the candidates one last time before hitting the submit button, which would go to the Captain's computer, and, Lisald assumed, also to Commander McEntyre's (the Executive Officer, whom Lisald had yet to meet) computer.

Looking back at the list, he reviewed it again.

For the Assistant Chief Science Officer, Lisald had selected Lieutenant junior grade Siva Zh'achyrros, a female Arbazian from the Federation planet Arbazan. She had been in Starfleet a year less than Lisald. He didn't recognize her from the Academy, but that didn't mean anything. There were so many Cadets going through, and so many specializations, it was easy to not know everyone in the junior classes. Their paths simply never crossed. She had served on Deep Space Four for a stint as a run-of-the-mill science officer, then had transferred to the USS Verminus as Chief Astrometrics Officer, where she currently served now. She had put in her time, she was a go-getter, volunteering for additional duties and away missions, and was never afraid to question things and correct erroneous information input by senior officers. Lisald wanted someone that would check his work for accuracy. He valued peer review greatly, and wanted that in his Science Department Executive Officer.

Moving to the next name on the list, and for the Chief Astrometrics Officer position, he had originally had someone else, but changed it to Lieutenant junior grade Vastri Osaalbril, a female Huradaite from Hurada III, also a Federation world. She had been in Starfleet for about five years longer than Lisald, so their paths never crossed. Originally assigned to the USS Marduk, she had gotten into a heated argument with the Chief Operations Officer, who lodged a formal complaint into her record for insubordination. It had stymied her career, effectively removing her from the opportunity for transfer or for promotion from Ensign to Lieutenant junior grade for three years. She had kept her nose clean after that incident and was allowed to transfer off the ship once her probation was over. It took her another year assigned to Science Station XIX to get promoted. Lisald liked what he read of her personality report, and thought he and she would and could work well together.

The next senior position in the Science department was the Chief Alien Archaeologist/Anthropologist position. This position was near and dear to Lisald's heart, as this was the position he started at before being moved to Assistant Chief Science Officer, then to Chief Science Officer. He wanted only the best in this role, and would watch the officer carefully, help mentor them the way that Captain Stafford and now-Captain Larsen had done for him. The officer he selected was Ensign Graifer Tarilar, a male Tessen from Tessen III, a new member-world of the Federation, just five years into the fold. Ensign Tarilar had just graduated from the Academy only four months ago, and was waiting assignment. Lisald looked at the officers scholastic record, and was impressed. While Ensign Tarilar did not have a doctorate like Lisald did, the young man had a certain knack for being able to see beyond the data, and extrapolate information about races long since extinct. Lisald wished he had that ability.

Moving down his list, the non-gendered Ensign Madiad Radeg, a Casperian from Casperia Prime was Lisald's choice for Senior Biologist. Enign Radeg had made top marks in biology at the Academy, and could not complain at all at the extracurricular activities he had participated in during his free time. Lisald thought he would make a great addition to his team, and to the Godddard.

The second-to-last senior position was that of a Senior Language Specialist. While language was not something Vaat himself excelled at, he did know that he needed someone that could pick out patterns. An officer from Zadar IV, a male Zadoite named Ensign Potulli Dricho was his choice. Zadoites had a reputation for being able to see language patterns where none seemingly existed, and were able to pick up from that syntax and morphology that even the Universal Translater couldn't always pick up. Ensign Dricho was no exception to this rule. While it was probably borderline racism that Lisald picked a specific race for this position, Vaat thought he could explain why, if ever he was asked.

Rounding out his top picks was Senior Chief Petty Officer Nixeni Voix for Senior Stellar Cartographer. Senior Chief Voix hailed from Nivoch. She had been in Starfleet for twenty-nine years. Her service record was filled with ships, stations, outposts and assignments that took her all over the Federation, and on missions well outside of the borders. She had been part of missions that explored thirty four new star systems, and had been instrumental in her efforts to help chart those systems, and even helped to plot new courses for subsequent ships to those systems, as well as course corrections for several existing space lanes for safety and expediency. Clearly this was someone Lisald wanted on his team. If ever the Goddard was tasked with going where nobody in the Federation had ever been, Lisald wanted someone with experience and verifiable expertise to help guide their way, to be their torch-bearer, as it were. Senior Chief Voix was that person.

Happy with his picks, Lisald tapped the submit button, sighed heavily, set the PADD down, stretched as he stood, then made his way to the bridge. He wanted to get the Captain and First Officer's approval before submitting the personnel request to Starfleet Headquarters, Personnel Division.
